We partied at Libby Montana Bar in Mequon last night and had a ball–a volleyball!! Their volleyball leagues play in their indoor, sand “Volleydome” on Thursday nights.

Players enjoyed Mount Royal Light shots and cocktails and Libby’s pizza in between their games and hanging out with the Mount Royal girls! Try the shot that we were drinking the Washington Apple: Mount Royal Light mixed with cranberry juice and a splash of apple pucker! YUM!

We gave away lots of T-shirts and prizes and raffled off the bear mirror at 10 p.m. Even though there was a pile of tickets in the pot, we managed to pull a winner on our second try! Congrats!

My husband and I started drinking Mount Royal Light a year ago. Mount Royal Light is perfect for an Old Fashion; it is smooth and has less alcohol content. We are big Packer fans and like to have a shot when they score a touchdown. We came up with the perfect shot, Maple infused Mount Royal Light Rye Whisky. Mix 2 parts Mount Royal Light Rye Whisky with 1 part pure Maple Syrup; you have to use the best pure Maple Syrup you can buy. We mix a batch up about 3 months prior to football season, store it in the refrigerator, shake it up once a week and by first game it is ready!

I am attaching a few photos, one of me enjoying a Mount Royal Light Old Fashion at the 21 Gun Saloon in Denmark, WI and a few pictures of our family’s After Bender Golf outing, named so because it is the day after Johnsonville’s Pretzel Bender festival. For the past 10 years we have had a family golf outing on the first Tuesday after the 4th of July. This year we had a total of 28 people, 18 golfers and 10 that came to join us for lunch. We all enjoyed using and showing off our cool Mount Royal Light golf towels!

July Drink of the Month: Whisky Lemonade

WHISKY LEMONADE - July

WHISKY LEMONADE – July 2012

Have you tried this one yet? Cool off with this easy-to-mix drink in this HOT July weather! This drink recipe was submitted by Riley M. in the recipe contest a few months ago. You only need 3 ingredients… Super easy and super delicious!

“Start with a shot (or two if you’re feeling lucky) of Mount Royal Light, then add your favorite light lemonade. My favorite is Minute Maid Light in the can. This way it is really portable. I finish off the drink with a squeeze of lemon and a lemon wedge for the edge of the glass. Add ice if you would like! This makes for a great summer drink and won’t make you feel super full like how you can feel when you are drinking beer. This also makes for a great pool-side drink!” -Riley M.

June Drink of the Month: Light Royal Cranberry

LIGHT ROYAL CRANBERRY - June

LIGHT ROYAL CRANBERRY – June 2012

One of the winners of our Recipe Contest was Riley’s submission of Light Royal Cranberry. She pours 1-2 shots of Mount Royal Light over ice and adds cranberry juice to it. Her favorite brand of cranberry juice to use is Ocean Spray because it’s lighter on the calories but still has the same great taste. Riley says that this drink is delicious all times of the year but she particularly likes to drink it while laying by the pool in the summer. Enjoy! Maybe post of pictures of you and your friends drinking a Light Royal Cranberry by your pool on our Facebook page!

Light vs. Lite

(This blog post refers only to "light" and "lite" when it comes to food and drinks. Obviously there are other definitions for both. The Online Etymology Dictionary helped me out with the specifics.)

Our new, awesome Mount Royal Light t-shirts sparked a question…

Q: Why are some foods and alcohols named “light” and others are “lite”?

The Online Etymology Dictionary listed light and lite as the following:

Light: not heavy; light in weight.

Lite: alternative spelling of light by 1962. Used from at least 1917 in product names, often as a variation of light.

I found several comments listing the meanings that the words light or lite on a package or in a brand name could mean from various websites.

  • A third fewer calories, or no more than half the fat, of the original version of the product.
  • No more than half the sodium compared to the original version of the product.
  • A lighter color or texture — this does not affect the nutrition of the product.

In Mount Royal Light’s case, it’s a third fewer calories and a third less alcohol. My point is, there is not really a big difference between the two words when it comes to describing a brand. It has to do more with what the company prefers to call their product. Light has several other definitions and uses and in those cases, lite would not make sense to use.

The Grammarist blog says, “If you want to be safe, use it only in reference to low-calorie or low-fat versions of things.”

Is Mount Royal Light Gluten-free?

There have been no reports of allergic reactions to Mount Royal Light but we cannot claim that it is gluten-free due to TTB regulations.

We’ve been asked a few times if Mount Royal Light is gluten-free. After a bit of exploring and asking the Sazerac reps here’s your answer:

Gluten is the protein-containing part of grain. Wheat gluten is what people are most concerned about, especially those with Celiac disease. All of our domestic vodkas are produced from corn. Weller and Van Winkle products do have wheat in the recipe; however our other Bourbons only use corn, barley and rye.

Other countries have determined that distilled products with no additives (vodka, bourbon, tequila) can be considered gluten-free as they are pure distilled products. United States has not made such a ruling, yet. To the best of our knowledge, the distillation removes or denatures the proteins and gluten associated with the starting grains.

Until very recently it was against regulations for any alcohol beverage to advertise as “Gluten-free.” The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury has just come out with a ruling for producers to start voluntarily labeling products that contain one of the eight major allergens: wheat, milk, eggs, soybeans, peanuts, treenuts, fish, and shellfish. We expect that this regulation will soon become mandatory.

We have not heard of any adverse allergic reactions nor had any complaints from celiac patients to our products. However, as always, please consult your physician before consuming any alcoholic beverages.

Basically, we cannot claim that Mount Royal Light is gluten-free because of TTB regulations, but “we have not heard of any adverse allergic reactions nor had any complaints from Celiac patients” to it. Drink on MRL lovers!

If you need help setting up a Facebook or Twitter account in order to participate in any contest, here’s a simple step-by-step guide to getting started!

From the Kitchen of Grandma Olive

Every year my family makes what we call touque (took-kay) together for the holiday season. This year we’re having touque-making December 3rd! Touque is also called Tourtière which is French for “pie dish.” It is a meat pie that originated in Quebec, Canada (Woohoo Canada products represent!!) and is a traditional French-Canadian Christmas and New Year’s dish served at dinnertime.

Great-Grandma Olive

There is not one specific recipe for touque but my family uses a recipe my Great-Grandma Olive always used that has been passed-down for generations. Traditionally, you make a LOT of pies for the extended family the first week of December. Members from each family gather at the oldest mother’s home to help make the pies. My family makes 35-45 pies each year. The pies are then frozen and the first pie of the new batch cannot be eaten until Christmas morning. This recipe is for one pie.

**Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

SPECIAL SUPPLIES
  • Pastry cutter or cuisinart with sharp blade to mix dough
  • Cake tin (not a pie tin, sides on cake tins are higher & not slanted)
  • Rolling Pin
  • Blender to puree onion
INGREDIENTS FOR MEAT
  • 1 pound coarsely ground pork (if they don’t have ground pork, ask the butcher for pork shoulder and have them ground it for you)
  • 1/6 of a large onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup water

DIRECTIONS TO MAKE MEAT
Puree onion in blender. Add correct amounts of meat, onion, water, salt and pepper. Cook on stove and add more water if there is not enough juice after evaporating. There should be about 2/3 meat and 1/3 juice after cooked.

INGREDIENTS FOR DOUGH
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 (rounded) tablespoon Crisco
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup ice-cold water

DIRECTIONS TO MAKE DOUGH
Blend dry ingredients first with cuisinart or pastry cutter. Then add wet ingredients until mixture forms into a ball. Roll out a bottom crust (about 1/4 inch thick) of dough to cover inside of cake tin. Trim extra dough off sides after pinching around rim of tin. Roll the top crust, also about 1/4 inch thick, to lay over the top of the tin.

DIRECTIONS TO FINISH
  • Fill cake tin about 2/3 full with meat and juice
  • Cover meat with top crust. Pinch top crust to bottom crust around the rim of tin.
  • Trim off the extra pie crust.
  • Bake at 400 degrees until edges are slightly browned (about 20-30 minutes)
  • Let it cool.
  • Cover with tinfoil or put in large Ziploc bag
  • Freeze until ready to eat.
  • Reheat in oven at 350 degrees F for 1 hour uncovered before eating.

I’ll try to get some pictures posted of my amazing family making touque this weekend. It is quite the production considering there are over 40 of us (Including aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents!) What are some of your family traditions? I want to hear all about them in the comments!
